Wound Care: Typical self care therapy

This is not started until the surgeon recommends that the wound be allowed to get wet.

1) Wash gently in warm water daily. If allowed by the surgeon, wounds may be washed with a mild, perfume-free soap (Ivory, Neutrogena) or mild shampoo. Pat dry with gauze.

2) Cover all wounds and stitches (but not pins - see pin care protocol) with a light layer of antibiotic or A&D ointment at all other times.

3) Cover with gauze or coban as instructed.

4) Avoid sun exposure or use sunblock on wounds for at least six months.
