deQuervain's tendinitis Discussion
deQuervain's tendinitis is due to inflammation of the extensor and abductor
tendons of the thumb which are constrained by the first dorsal extensor
compartment at the level of the radial styloid. Many patients have an
anatomic predisposition to this syndrome, and develop this problem
spontaneously. This problem may be progressive and can recur in the future.
Treatment options include therapy, antiinflammatory medication, splinting,
local cortisone injection or surgery to decompress the tendon sheath.
Specific problems with treatment include painful irritation or dysfunction
of the superficial radial nerve, stiffness and persistence or recurrence of
symptoms.
